Are You Insured For Summer Fun?

Boating InsuranceBoating, motorcycling, and camping are just some of the many things we do to enjoy the summer months. While summer is a great time to travel and get away from work for a few days, it’s important to make sure all those expensive toys you use to have that fun are covered by your insurance. If not, you could be paying for a lot more than just your family vacation.

Here is a list of items to make sure you have insured before you head out the door this summer:

Motorcycles

Just as most states require car insurance, many states require you to have motorcycle insurance. Motorcycle insurance will protect you and your bike if you have an accident, and since most motorcycle accidents happen between May and September, now is a good time to make sure you’re insured.

RV

Recreation Vehicles (RVs) are a great way to travel and enjoy the great outdoors in luxurious fashion. But make sure you check your insurance policy—Some insurance companies define both a motorhome and travel trailer as an RV, while others require separate coverage. Make sure you’re covered by your insurance before you hit the open road.

Boat

Unlike motorcycle and RV insurance, boat insurance is not required in most states. But that doesn’t mean you shouldn’t have it insured. In 2014, there were 4,000 boating accidents that resulted in $39 million in injuries and damage. That’s a lot of out of pocket expense if you have an accident.

ATV

It can be confusing to know if your all-terrain vehicles are covered. They are not covered by your auto insurance, but some homeowner’s policies do cover them. Make sure you check your policy to see if you need to add your ATV or UTV to your policy.

Extra Tips

It’s important to know that most homeowner’s and renter’s insurance will cover your possessions while you travel. Whether you’re taking a weekend getaway or backpacking across Europe, the off-premises coverage will protect your possessions no matter where you are in the world. Just be aware that many policies have a limit to how much they will cover with these policies, so if you plan to travel with a number of expensive items, you may need separate coverage on these items.
